We were hooked. I traded and bought for a pair of Narragansetts, a beautiful heritage breed, and we've been enjoying the eggs they've laid for us through the year, both for eating and for hatching out. I've traded and sold their poults (chicks) to help offset the cost of raising them, and it's been working out really well.
Although I like the Narragansetts, I wanted to raise something a little more unique. Alecia at Edelweiss Ranch was also going to order some specialty turkeys, so I did some reading up on Porter's rare turkeys, and decided on the Auburn turkeys, and ordered 10 poults.
I plan to raise 2 flocks:
Flock A - purebred Auburns, at least 3 hens and 1 tom, for the purists ;)
Flock B - experimental Bronze/Auburns, at least 3 hens and 1 tom, as a trial. I'm going to have 3 or more purebred Bronze hens, with 1 purebred Auburn tom. My hope is that this will produce sex linked poults (their color at hatching shows if they're male or female); this would be a very handy trait in selling them. I'll raise them out this way the first year, to prove if this technique works or not. If it doesn't work, we'll just sell off or eat the experimental flock, and keep only the purebred Auburn flock. If the technique works, however, it will be a lovely addition to our little farm.
