Since then, the rabbitry has kind of limped along, serviceable but not ideal - cages had to be moved urgently before the snow, so there wasn't time to thoughtfully plan where they would work best, they were moved as quickly as possible to where we could fit them right then, to get all the rabbits to safety. It was a good thing we did, too, since that was the very night all of our tarp shelters finally collapsed.
The last couple of days, I've been working steadily on making the rabbitry more efficient. The first day was just planning - taking measurements, using graph paper to chart it all out, take stock of what cages were available and what condition they were all in, then decide where they should go, and who should go in them.
Thursday was all about digging in and getting the work done. The weather cooperated for the most part, though snow melt from the deck above made the rabbitry feel like I was in a very cold rain forest (don't worry - the cages all have their own "roofs" to keep them protected from that); I shoveled most of the snow off the deck, then got back to work on moving things around in the rabbitry.
Friday I attached 2 big quonset style maternity cages together, then attached those to their new base so they're at a good working height for me, and put their roof on. I put the upper deck cages in place on the top level of the cage rack.
This morning, the rabbits were all placed in their cages so they can settle in. Jo's litter by Chocolate was overdue to be separated into the buck and doe grow out cages, so that was done as well. They still need to be assessed, and keeper grow outs will get their tattoos.
All in all, I'm so very happy with my rabbitry! :)
